Visual Nature Studio 3 Feature of the Week

Years in the making, VNS 3 is the biggest 3D Nature upgrade ever.

With features that immediately benefit everyone from beginner to advanced users, VNS 3 is already producing great results in the projects of visualization experts around the world.

Each week our Feature of the Week will focus on one of the new cutting-edge features VNS 3 offers. This week's feature is:

Streamlined Thematic Mapping

VNS 3 makes linking to numeric Shapefile attributes a snap!

VNS has always had the powerful ability to multiply the work you put into visualization by customizing many visible items using numeric Shapefile attributes. Want a forest of four thousand Spruce/Fir forest polygons to each have a distinct density and height? Just connect them to attribute columns in your Shapefile using Thematic Maps, and VNS will customize each one with the proper values as it renders it. Make a city of skyscrapers, warehouses and condos instantly using just a building heights attribute. Make one shared Component, and let VNS numerically adjust it for each polygon instance.

This process just got faster and easier with VNS 3.

Previously, you would need to create a Thematic Map component, set a raster Resolution (like all area components before VNS 3), set area or point/line interpretation, choose a Search query that would be used to associate it with a set of vectors, and possibly enter a unit conversion multiplier. No more. VNS 3 has eliminated the imprecise, cumbersome and memory-hogging rasterization and the area/point/line interpretation.

Closer association between your vectors and components internally means VNS 3 knows what it needs automatically without your help. It knows what vectors are associated with your component -- no more Search Query needed. All you need to do is specify the attribute column, and optionally a unit conversion factor. We've even provided an extended collection of useful unit conversion factors for you, for things like turning number-of-building-floors into building height.

And now, in VNS 3.03, we have even made the process simpler. Instead of opening the Thematic Map Editor, you can now choose a numeric attribute and an optional conversion factor right from the Thematic operations popup menu. Simple, Quick and Easy.

  • Multiply the effectiveness of your work.
  • Adapts automatically to changing Shapefile attributes.
  • Works great with dynamic Reimport.
  • No more need to open the Thematic Map Editor.
  • No need for Resolution, area/point/line or Search Query in the Thematic Map.
