Wildfire Visualization for the Institute for Business and Home Safety

October 13, 2008
Morrison, CO
Related and Print Quality Images

Recently, 3D Nature created a three-minute 3D visualization of the damaging Witch Creek Wildfire that burned for 10 days in San Diego County, Calif., in October 2007.

Working on a tight budget and deadline under contract with the Institute for Business & Home Safety, 3D Nature recreated the affected areas in Visual Nature Studio, modeling terrain, roads, vegetation and houses. An informative voice-over explained the factors underlying the survival or destruction of various homes as the viewer witnessed firsthand the effects of the fire.

"Wildfires are called wild for a reason, they can be uncontrollable," said IBHS President & CEO Julie Rochman. "Through the video we were able to help people understand that they can take back control by protecting their homes from these fires. We were able to illustrate that it doesn't have to cost a lot to make some very effective changes."

Copies of the video were distributed to news media at press conferences in Sacramento and San Diego, and the video was shown during a presentation at the Benfield Group's West Coast Catastrophe Summit in Santa Monica. Media outlets replayed segments from the video during nightly newscasts. View the video and read the accompanying IBHS report at www.DisasterSafety.org/megafire

3D Nature Releases Visual Nature Studio 3

August 26, 2008
Morrison, CO

3D Nature released the newest technology in 3D terrain visualisation, modelling, rendering and animation software, Visual Nature Studio 3. Through interface enhancements and rendering changes VNS 3 is now able to create better imagery faster than ever before.

The 3D Nature Test Team already experienced significant benefits in real world projects, laying out new roads for the 2010 Canadian Winter Olympics and designing a new golf course in Australia. Proponents developed a visual impact analysis of a wind farm and a new map was published of the Po Valley in Northern Italy.

After completing a client project, Test Team Member Kris Briede said, “Because VNS 3 is GIS-based for data importation, very early design concepts such as rough sketches can be easily brought into the project and any designs can be quickly evaluated, viewsheds can be assessed quickly and realtime interactive files can be created to test design changes.”

Visual Nature Studio 3 includes a significantly expanded Foliage Library for greater location accuracy. All add-ons that work with VNS 2 will continue to work with the new capabilities in VNS 3.

3D Nature Imagery in Historical New Yorker Article

September 26, 2007
Morrison, CO

The Wildlife Conservation Society and Markly Boyer have created a series of visualizations depicting the island of Manhattan prior to development. 3D Nature’s Visual Nature Studio software was instrumental in making the historical depictions come to life. The October issue of The New Yorker Magazine includes an article about the Mannahatta Project. These images will also appear in several museum exhibits.

According to the WCS, “The aim of the Mannahatta Project is to reconstruct the ecology of Manhattan when Henry Hudson first sailed by in 1609 and compare it to what we know of the island today. The Mannahatta Project will help us to understand, down to the level of one city block, where in Manhattan streams once flowed or where American Chestnuts may have grown, where black bears once marked territories, and where the Lenape fished and hunted. Most history books dispense of the pre-European history of New York in only a few pages. However, with new methods in geographic analysis and the help of a remarkable 18th-century map, we will discover a new aspect of New York culture, the environmental foundation of the city.”

Visual Nature Studio has been used in historical recreations the world over. A recent example is a map of the historic trail used by the original group to summit the Himalayan peak, K2, created by Marco Gualdrini of Italy.

Please Note: Mannahatta Project is the correct spelling of the project. Please do not spell correct this.

Contract Project of Upper Delaware Completed

Recently, 3D Nature completed a series of visualizations of the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River under contract to the National Parks Service and The Upper Delaware Scenic Byway (New York State Route 97). The visualizations concerned the placement and visual impact of New York Regional Interconnect's 190-mile long high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line from Oneida County, New York to Orange County, New York. Using reference photos, and GIS data of terrain and vegetation, 3D Nature created accurate 3D images of the proposed alignment to illustrate the position and visibility of the powerline towers from critical viewpoints. Paired photorealistic images and matching reference "guide" images (containing only brightly-colored towers on a neutral featureless terrain) help stakeholders locate and analyze the visual impact within the context of familiar locations. A sample image is available here.

Visualizing the Big Picture with ECW and Visual Nature Studio 2

Visualization users around the world now have fast convenient and efficient access to huge high-resolution imagery datasets with Visual Nature Studio 2's support for Earth Resource Mapping's open standard Enhanced Compression Wavelet (ECW) technology. VNS2 supports dynamic demand-paged loading of ECW files to efficiently access only the required data in a large image.

"What this means is if you're visualizing a site and have an image mosaic of the entire region, you no longer need to crop and georeference a subset of your image. Just provide VNS2 with your ECW file, and it will efficiently use the areas you need coverage for without using excessive memory or requiring laborious cropping or preprocessing. Being able to immediately use massive off the shelf image mosaics greatly speeds the visualization process." said Chris Hanson, Vice President of Research and Development for 3D Nature.

VNS 2 also makes use of ECW's Image Web Server capabilities, requesting only the minimal data needed to satisfy the visualization requirements and opening the door to accessing numerous web-based image datasets. VNS2 automatically reads georeferencing metadata from ECW files, using VNS 2's dynamic reprojection for automatic alignment of imagery with other DEM raster and vector data. VNS 2 can also save raster output visualizations to the ECW format, complete with georeferencing for use in other GIS and imagery applications.

VNS 2 is used worldwide for terrain visualization in Architecture, GIS, Forestry, Land Planning, Civil Engineering, Golf Course Design, Aerospace, Television, Feature Films, Game Development and Publishing.

Visual Nature Studio 2 is currently available for Windows and Macintosh.
